100th Test Match at The Oval, commemorative painting, 2017
I was honored to be asked by Surrey Cricket to paint the100th Test Match played at The Oval Cricket Ground, a game between England and South Africa in July 2017. The moment I chose to depict was Ben Stokes smashing a glorious six into the OCS Stand to reach a sparkling century. Stokes went onto make 112, an innings in which he became only the second Englishman to hit three consecutive sixes in a Test match. Another highlight to this memorable days play was debutant Toby Roland-Jones taking a sensational 4-39 as England seized control of the third Test against South Africa on day two at The Oval. The ground hosted the first ever Test Match in England in 1880 and was the place the Ashes were created in 1882. In the twentieth century, 1938 saw Sir Len Hutton hit the highest ever Test Match score by an Englishman at The Oval before, ten years later, the great Sir Donald Bradman played his last ever innings at the ground, memorably just failing to score the four runs he required for a Test Match average of 100
